“More liberal approach” Malta becomes the 1st country in the European Union to legalize marijuana

What happened:   On the 21st of December, Malta became the first country in the EU to legalize the cultivation and personal use of cannabis, and adults would be allowed to carry up to 7 grams of cannabis. However, smoking weed in front of children has been made illegal in the country. Malta’s President was also in favour of the bill promoting the use of recreational marijuana and it was unanimously passed.  Details: At the same time, another Minister from Malta said,  “The historic move would stop small-time cannabis users from facing the criminal justice system and would help to curb the drug trafficking.”  On the other hand, Malta’s President faces opposition from the Nationalist Party as their spokesperson said,  “This would only lead to strengthening the illegal market.”  Nationalists Party also believed that this would promote organized crime in the country.  More: Despite the opposition, cannabis was made legal as individuals can now carry 7 grams but less than 28 grams. However, smoking in public will be fined 235 Euros, and if an individual smokes in front of a child, he’ll be fined 5000 Euros.
