What happened: An Indonesian teacher identified as Herry Wirawan, aged 36 was found guilty of raping 13 female students and allegedly impregnating 8 of the 13 minor female students. On February 15, an Indonesian court sentenced Herry to life imprisonment as he was found guilty of the crime. The News quoted the development as, “In a case that has drawn national attention to sexual abuse in some of the country’s religious boarding schools.”
Details: The rape cases were reported to the Indonesian police when one of the victim’s family reported to police that their daughter was sexually assaulted by the teacher. Whereas, the development was further quoted by The News, “During the trial it was revealed he(Herry) had raped the children, many from poor families attending the school on scholarships over five years.”
More: Chief Justice of the Indonesian court, Justice Yohanes Purnomo, is quoted by Arab News, “As a teacher and caretaker of the Islamic Boarding School, he should protect, guide, and educate the students… but the defendant has set a bad example and destroyed the future of children.” On the other hand, Herry has pleaded for leniency, as Arab News quotes, “Leniency to allow him to raise his children, saying that he raped his victims in moments of weakness.”
