Malala penned down a note to Vogue, as a response to people who questioned her views on marriage

What happened: Malala Yousufzai (@malala) has written to Vogue, stating her reasons for marrying a few months after expressing her doubts about “getting married.”

Details : Malala tied the knot with Asser Malik (@asser.malik), on 9th November in a private ceremony, in Birmingham. In an interview with Vogue magazine, the youngest Nobel laureate stated that she was not opposed to marriage but was wary of its practice. “I feared losing my humanity, my independence, my womanhood – my solution was to avoid getting married at all,” she said. Malala questioned the patriarchal underpinnings of marriage and the compromises women must make after the wedding. She had also stated that until her second year of university, she believed she would never marry. Malala said that she couldn’t call herself a feminist if she didn’t have similar reservations, referring to her previous views against marriage which expressed to the same publication back in June in which she said, “Why people have to get married, why can’t it just be a partnership?” In her piece, Malala also referred to the conditions under which girls have to get married back in her hometown, “Growing up in the north of Pakistan, girls were taught that marriage was a substitute for an independent life. If you don’t study, get a job and build a place for yourself, you must get married soon. You failed your exams? You can’t find work? Get married!”

What else: The Nobel Laureate also shared how she met Asser Malik, “In the summer of 2018, Asser was visiting friends at Oxford and we crossed paths. He worked in cricket, so I immediately had a lot to discuss with him. He liked my sense of humour. We became best friends.” Malala claims that they liked each other’s company and were there for one other through good times and bad.
