Academy Award-winning Pakistani director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy premiered her most recent animated film Sitara: Let Girls Dream in New York on September 23rd, 2019.
The film’s executive producers include Gloria Steinem, the iconic women’s rights activist, and Darla Anderson, the Academy Award Winning producer of Coco and Toy Story 3.
Written and directed by Sharmeen, the story is based in the old city of Lahore where Pari, a 14 year old girl, dreams of becoming a pilot.
The film wordlessly tells a tale of a girl whose budding dreams and aspirations are trampled by the cultural and traditional obligations that families in our society expect girls to uphold.
“For me, Sitara is more than a film, it is a movement that we want to start across the world, that encourages parents to invest in their girls’ dreams, encouraging them to free their girls from the burdens of early marriage,” said Obaid-Chinoy.
