What Happened: Leena Ghani, who’s a celebrated artist and one of the volunteers of the Lahore Aurat March was attacked at the Jam-e-shiri park by a man. Leena shared the triggering encounter through video in a Twitter thread.
Leena stated that she was in the park with friends in the park, after which a creepy onlooker decided to snap pictures of them. Leena confronted the man and attempted to record him. At this point, the man tried to snatch Leena’s phone away from her and assaulted her by pushing her. After the altercation, as the man walked away, he verbally abused them making obscene gestures pointing at his genitals while the women hurled him away.
He was eventually taken away by other men in the park and Leena & the women can be heard to be calling Dolphin Police force in the backdrop of the video.
The prevalence of patriarchy: Leena adding tweets signifying how going through such an experience is not unheard of for women in any kind of public space. She called out men to feel ‘disgusted, ashamed, and embarrassed’ at the actions of the man in the video as he represents a large faction of men, and how he is no different from the common Pakistani man.
She continued on how the statement ‘Yes all men’ is truly depicted by this video as most women have seen this anger that men have carried throughout generations and how women have lived with the trauma of that untamed, wild and inhumane anger.
Reaction: Many rushed to the replies offering Leena support and calling the incident disgusting, condemning the man’s revolting behavior. Amna Baig from the Islamabad police also came to the replies requesting Punjab Police to look into the matter.
