Lahore’s Latest Craving: Karamel’s Cookies

Karamel recently launched in Lahore, much to the joy of Lahoris on the prowl for the next big food joint.

The bakery with the tagline, “for the love of cookies” opened its doors to the Lahori public a few months ago, on M M Alam road in Gulberg. But its popularity can’t be credited to location only, Karamel has a strong presence on social media; it’s feed boasts likeable and sharable images of large cookies with visible half melted chocolate chunks.

The outlet itself is of modest size, with sparse furniture and decor. A bright neon sign, “Cookies”, is the first thing you see as you step inside and the overpowering smell of fresh cookies being baked hits you. A small seating area leads to the counter, where gigantic cookies are on display for customers impatient to bite into Karamel’s finest.

The menu isn’t limited to cookies though, the bakery also offers cookie cups, cookie cakes, brownies, assortment of coffees and teas along with ice cream.

There are twelve options of cookies in the Chunky Cookies Line ranging from Milk Chocolate to Red Velvet White Chocolate. The New York Chunky Line of cookies has two selections: New York Chunky and Double New York Chunky.

The price per cookie ranges between PKR 275 to PKR 295, exclusive of taxes. But with one cookie big enough for two people, the price seems justified keeping in mind market prices. But is the price point sweet enough to make customers order more than one cookie per person? Quite unlikely.

At Karamel, each cookie has a chocolate based filling and is heated up for a few seconds before being served. You also have the option of getting a hot cookie with a scoop of ice cream on top of it.

The cookies themselves are flavourful and scrumptious but loose some of their appeal if you aren’t having them fresh. The texture of the cookies is moist, soft and gooey, but still crumbles when you bite in. While the focus of Karamel is cookies, one of its best offerings is the ice cream cookie combination.

Karamel’s uniqueness arises from the fact that it specialises in cookies, perfecting each recipe and offering you the best in cookies.

Perhaps the only disappointing thing about Karamel is its lack of offering for those with dietary limitations. Those who suffer from gluten intolerance, lactose intolerance or are diabetic can’t indulge in what Karamel has to offer. Considering we are stepping into 2020, the lack of effort displayed by eateries, including Karamel, in catering for those other than the mainstream customers is quite disappointing.
