Lahore will soon see its first trans-person school under the directives of Punjab Education Minister

What happened: On March 15, the Punjab School Education Department announced the opening of a transgender school in the provincial capital’s Barkat Market. Details: The department has chosen to convert Barkat Market’s Government Girls High School into a transgender school. It will be the city’s first school for the city’s marginalised community. At a ceremony, Punjab School Minister Education, Murad Raas, stated that the province’s first transgender school was inaugrated in Multan, in 2021, with another set to open soon in Lahore. He claimed that the majority of the work on the Lahore project is almost done. Why it matters: Raas stated that schools for the transgender population would be established in all of the province’s districts. He said that members of the transgender community were being admitted to separate schools due to concerns about other students’ behaviour towards them.  What’s next: The District Education Authority (DAE) has begun the process of converting the girls school into a transgender school. The school personnel will be appointed as part of the rationalisation policy, or new staff will be recruited.
