What happened: In a flight funded by US celebrity, Kim Kardashian, members of Afghanistan’s women’s youth football team were sent to the United Kingdom. Twitter lauded the celebrity for her kind gesture.

Details: A total of 130 individuals were in the flight. It included 35 female players with their families. They arrived on Thursday morning at Stansted Airport, London. The group was in Pakistan on temporary 30-day visas since fleeing Afghanistan after the Taliban took over. Soon when their asylum period expired no other country was willing to take them in. The foundation ROKiT helped organize the footballers’ trip. A spokeswoman for Kardashian said the expense was paid for her SKIMS brand. Siu-Anne Gill, the CEO said that Kim was “incredibly humbled by the courage displayed by these girls.” Since regaining control on August 15, the Taliban have stated that women are allowed to play football, but under strict conditions. This includes not being allowed to play in public. Other female Afghan footballers have fled to Portugal. More: A UK government spokesperson said, “Like others, we have brought to the UK from Afghanistan, the Afghanistan girls’ football team will receive a warm welcome, support and accommodation.” Andrea Radrizzani, the owner of the Premier League football club said in a statement, “We are delighted the Afghan Women and Girls Development Football Team and their families, led by their brave, former captain Khalida Popal has landed safely in the UK, following extensive efforts by a number of partners.”
