Who was Moses Somake? He was an Iraqi Jewish architect who was born in Lahore on June 6, 1875. He lived in Karachi for much of his life until moving to England in the mid-1940s. No one knows where he learned his craft, but he was a member of the Society of Architects during the first decade of the twentieth century. He died of a heart attack on April 6, 1947, in London. Why his work standouts: Somake’s work reflects the religious diversity of Karachi in the early twentieth century, including the design of a mosque, a Christian club, and a Zoroastrian school. On all of his structures, he always signed in a designated area. Many of his buildings are still standing such as the Karachi Goan Association Hall and the BVS Parsi School, are still in use, while others have been neglected or abandoned.
