What happened: ProperGaanda reached out to Maryam (@maryamful) regarding the incident of her getting moral policing by a Karachi restaurant’s waiter. She shared with ProperGaanda, “I went to clucky’s with my friend for lunch and one of my friends was taking pictures, and the worker told her…” The incident: ProperGaanda also reached out to the restaurant for their statement in this regard, which will be quoted later. However, Maryam shared, “The worker came to her and told her photoshoots are not allowed. She clarified that it is for her personal use, not blogging or modeling.” In reply to this, the waiter, according to Maryam, said, “Aap yahan tasveer nahi le sakti is tarha,” and Maryam in the interview said, “while pointing out at her sleeveless top.” What then happened: Later, Maryam inquired the waiter, and he said, “is haal mein pictures lenge koi deikh lega tou humaray liaye masla houjaiyega.” Maryam was left uncomfortable by this discriminatory and moral policing behavior. Clucky’s reply: While inquiring Clucky about the incident they said, “We have reached out to the customer and are trying to apologize.” They further clarified, “Our waiters have never been guided to tell customers anything about their clothing.” They further claimed, “The incident has been falsely blamed on our team, and we are taking strict action against the waiter.” The management further noted, “If such instruction were to be followed, we would have had a notification at the branch.” What else did they say: They further highlighted, “We are a teenage brand, and we would never judge any customers based on their dress-up.” Maryam’s reply: We further inquired Maryam about Cluckys response, and she said, “Appreciate clucky reaching out with an apology, and I don’t think it fair to fire him or give him more warnings.” She also advised, “instead of move forward constructively and include ethical training for their staff so not only do they not treat their female customers discriminatorily but also adopt a welcoming attitude.”
