What happened:
Fuel loading has started for the Karachi Nuclear Power Plant Unit-2 (K-2), on Tuesday. After a fuel load permit was obtained from the Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority the process for loading fuel into the 1,100MW nuclear power plant began. The K-2 power plant, is going through a testing phase right now, and it is on track to be operational by April 2021. K-2 is based on the Chinese-1000 HPR technology, and is a pressurised water reactor and third generation plant which is equipped with advanced safety features, according to a spokesperson for the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC). The construction of the K-2 power plant began on 31st August, 2015. And, after it completes several operational and safety tests it will be functional in April 2021. K-2 is one of two nuclear power plants being built in Karachi. K-3, the second power plant is still under construction and is expected to be operational by the end of 2021. The completion of these nuclear power plants has remained largely on schedule despite the difficult times due to Covid-19 pandemic.
