What happened : The Birmingham Central Mosque in the United Kingdom has initiated a series of events to honour Islamophobia Awareness Month (IAM), a month-long campaign to raise awareness about the consequences of Islamophobia. The day will officially be observed on 26th November at Finsbury Park Mosque in London, England. Details : Muslim organisations have been pushing for greater awareness and tolerance since the IAM was created in 2012, in order to combat the issue of racially and religiously motivated hate crimes against British Muslims residing in the UK. Throughout the month, the mosque has hosted a number of events, including self-defense classes for Muslim women, coffee mornings, young people’s Islamophobia workshops, and a Muslim women’s panel. What else : According to a 2021 census report, Muslims have been the target of almost half of recorded religious hate crimes. Finsbury Park Mosque chairman, Mohammad Kozbar, says “Muslim women live in fear of racism as they are the main targets of Islamophobia for being visibly Muslim.”
