India’s tribal skating legend claims Netflix’s new movie is her stolen story

What happened: Skater Girl on Netflix is directed by an Indian filmmaker Manjari Makijany but it does not credit the Indian girl, Asha Gond, the film is based on. The 21 year old Asha says the film is about her and her Indian village. She even wrote an email to the filmmakers after watching the film to inquire about why she and her people were not credited, but they did not respond to her. Details: Asha also pointed out the film conveniently leaves out her and her fellow skaters experiences with gender and caste discrimination. The skating rink in her village was set up by a German activist Ulrike Reinhard which helped kids like Asha break away from gender and centuries-old caste barriers. The filmmakers came to her village, Janwaar, and spent time with the skater kids and herself but did not inform that they were shooting a film about them. Asha and her friends were also told that the film was about them but they could only be shown in the background towards the end of the film. Click here to see more from Propergaanda.
