India issued 20 diplomatic visas to Pakistan in a bid to restore relations
This is the 2nd time since 2019 that India and Pakistan have issued visas. The visas have been given to Pakistani diplomats and officials. It is pertinent to know that after Narendra Modi removed the semi-autonomous status of IIOJK, both the nations had stopped issuing visas, and this is only the second such incident.
Reports suggest India has issued 20 visas to Pakistani diplomats and officials. On the other hand, Pakistan has issued six visas to Indian diplomats. While, earlier in 2021, New Delhi and Islamabad had issued assignment visas after a gap of nearly 28 months. However, reports suggest that both countries are hinting at issuing more visas in the future to restore ties.
The assignment visas are only for the embassy staff of both countries. In 2019, the visa process had stopped as India’s president, Narendra Modi, withdrew IIOJK’s semi-autonomous status to have a formidable grip over Jammu and Kashmir. At the same time, this action by Narendra Modi was highly criticised among the Pakistanis as various protests were held nationwide.
