In a workshop organized in Mithi where psychologists, civil society members, and NGO’s took part, the causes and problems relating to the rising trend of women forced to take their own lives in the Tharparkar district were discussed.
One of the participants of the workshop shared that more than 100 women had taken their own lives over the past year.
Tharparkar also has the lowest Human Development Index rating among all the districts of Sindh.
The workshop also discussed that the people of Tharparkar, especially women and children are not only losing lives to various diseases but also poverty and customs are also forcing young women to take their own lives
Non-implementation of an agreement between the health department and a non-governmental organization on awareness of mental health among residents of the region is also being termed as the reason for increasing suicide cases.
Specialists have stressed on resolution of social and economic issues in order to control the growing trend of suicide, mentioning an awareness campaign that can be helpful in this regard.
