Imran Khan’s 40 year old record broken by Shaheen Afridi as he took 78 wickets in a calendar year

What happened: The left-arm speedster from Pakistan, Shaheen Shah Afridi, broke current Prime Minister Imran Khan’s record for most wickets in a calendar year in all three formats. Afridi took 78 wickets in all three formats, ODIs, Tests, and T20Is  in 44 innings of 36 matches with an average of 22. On the other hand, the cricketer turned politician took 76 wickets in a calendar year and the only other Pakistani pacer to take more wickets is Waqar Younis.

Details:   Shaheen Shah Afridi’s best performance came in Tests when he took six wickets for 51 runs. Shaheen also bowled phenomenally during the T20World Cup 2021 as he helped the Shaheens to qualify for the semi-finals.  What else: Imran Khan took 76 wickets in 1982 and was the first time that a Pakistani pacer had taken above 70 wickets in a calendar year. While, Waqar Younis took more than 90 wickets on two occasions, once in 1990, then in 1993, Waqar Younis took 91 wickets in a calendar year.
