According to the Bangladesh Coast Guard, nearly 400 Rohingya refugees who left Bangladesh by boat two months ago have been rescued at sea.

For now, the refugees including men, women and children, have been taken to the United Nations Refugee Agency to be quarantined for 14 days due to Covid-19 concerns.

Turned away from Malaysia

The boat was heading for the Malaysian coast but upon reaching, it was turned back by the Malaysian authorities.

The overcrowded boat then embarked to Myanmar and denied entry twice by the Myanmar navy.

Bangladesh authorities found the boat in territorial waters late on Wednesday after having spent 58 days adrift at sea.

“We understand these men, women and children were at sea for nearly two months in harrowing conditions and that many of them are extremely malnourished and dehydrated,” stated an official working with the UN’s refugee agency in Bangladesh.
