What happened: The Independent UK reported that a yarn consignment containing 90kg of heroin derivative worth 58 million dollars soaked in it had been seized by the Indian authorities. The authorities seized the container at the Pipavav port; and it weighed 9,760 kilograms and had been at the port for five months with paperwork declaring it contained  thread.  Details: India’s Anti_terrorosim Squad and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence had acted on a tip. They started the investigation of the consignment only to see 100 bags, including suspicious bags that were soaked in drugs. The Independent UK quoted India Authorities’ press release,  “It appeared that the drug syndicate used this unique modus operandi in which threads were soaked in a solution containing narcotic drug heroin which was then dried, made into bales and packed in bags.”  More: The heroin mixed in the thread would have needed to be extracted, and now the Indian authorities are investigating the seizure. The Independent UK quoted the development,  “India’s drug control agencies have boosted vigilance in Gujarat to prevent smuggling through sea routes from Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan.”
