Florida woman awarded $5.25 million by federal jury after she was inseminated by doctor

What happened: After being inseminated with her doctor’s sperm in 1977, a Florida woman named Cheryl Rousseau was awarded $5.25 million by the federal jury on March 30 as she filed a lawsuit in 2018 against Dr. John Coates III, accusing him of ‘medical negligence.’ Previously: Four decades ago, Rousseau and her husband had chosen artificial insemination, according to the lawsuit, they chose a donor who looked like her spouse and possessed the traits Rousseau required. However, their daughter eventually realised Coates was her biological father when she got a DNA test done. The doctor denied using his sperm at first, but later confessed to it. What happened next: Coates, who practised obstetrics and gynaecology in Vermont, has retired as his medical license was permanently terminated last month. On the other hand, a Colorado woman has also filed a similar case against him, accusing Coates of the same crime.
