First Arab woman to become an astronaut

Who is she: Nora al Matrooshi is a 28-year old mechanical engineer from the UAE who is currently training to become an astronaut. She has dreamt about space since she was a little girl, wanting to explore the space like her ancestors explored oceans.

“My mum’s side of the family are sailors. I’d say they explored the ocean. The term ‘astronaut’ means ‘star sailor’ in Greek,” says Nora.

Details: Nora and her fellow countryman, Mohammad al-Mulla, will leave for the Nasa’s Johnson Space Centre in the US later this year. For now the two budding astronauts are training in-house in Dubai and learning to speak Russian along with their flying lessons. Click here to see more from Propergaanda.
