Fifty Shades Freed is the number 1 trending film on Netflix in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan

The number one trending film on Netflix in Pakistan is Fifty Shades Freed, the third instalment of the popular BDSM-inspired 50 Shades of Grey franchise.  And honestly, nothing can be more ironic than this.

Pakistan, much like the rest of the world, is busy dealing with rising cases of the Coronavirus pandemic. The current number stands at 193 and everyone is advised to practice social distancing. That means many college and university students, along with working people are all at home and have got nothing to do. So, perhaps they’ve all taken to Netflix, but why is everyone watching Fifty Shades Freed?

Hypocrisy at best

On a particular day of March, the entirety of the male community in Pakistan and a few females, all become the most religious people on the planet. And yes, that day is 8th of March, the day we celebrate Aurat March. On 8th March, twitter was full of sub tweets tweeting “Is this the Islamic Republic of Pakistan?” on women holding posters asking for equal rights.

We’ve got the answer now. This is the Islamic Republic of Pakistan where a movie based entirely on sex is trending number 1 on one of the most commonly used streaming platforms, Netflix.

So cute how you can spur an article based on a statistic that reflects the 1% population who are aware of and have access to NETFLIX. 🙂
