What happened: Pakistan’s Federal Minister of Law, Justice Faroogh Naseem, in an interview, said, “Chemical castration clause has been repealed in the anti-rape law.” Reports have claimed that the Pakistani government has had ‘cold-feet,’ right before the amended bill, and removed the castration clause.
Details: Whereas, the Council of Islamic Ideology, has raised several objections to the chemical castration clause. Parliamentary Secretary for Law & Justice, Maleeka Bokhari is quoted by a publication saying, “ Article 227 of the Constitution also guarantees that all laws must be under the Shariah and the Holy Quran. Hence, we can not pass any law that goes against these values.” However, the secretary has claimed that an anti-rape crisis cell would be set up. Maleeka Bokhari quoted by a publication, revealed, “ Government had promised to protect people’s rights and it did so by introducing necessary legislation.”
Also: Previously, the parliament was aiming to pass legislation that may subject habitual rapists to chemical castration. In 2020 the president Arif Alvi had also approved an anti-rape ordinance that aimed at the chemical castration of rapists.
