Customs officials in Germany caught four tonnes of cocaine, worth around $ 1 billion, in the country’s largest ever drug bust

The drugs were being transported from Montevideo, Uruguay, to Antwerp, Belgium, when they were intercepted by authorities during a routine check two weeks ago. The shipment, listed as soya beans, was hidden in over 200 black sports bags inside a shipping container. The drugs have since been destroyed under strict security, officials said. “Assuming that this likely high-purity cocaine can be cut to triple the amount for street sale, the 4.5 tonnes has a street value of approximately €1 billion”, the Hamburg Customs agency said in a statement. It added that the Hamburg prosecutor’s office were now investigating the intended destination of the container.

The daughter of the late Ronald Reagan has said there is “no defence” for racist comments he made in a 1971 phone conversation

Newly unearthed tapes reveal Reagan – then Governor of California – described UN African delegates as “monkeys”. He was referring to Tanzanian delegates at the UN, who had just sided against the US in a vote to recognise China and expel Taiwan. Reagan – a supporter of Taiwan – called the president the next day, telling him: “To see those… monkeys from those African countries – damn them, they’re still uncomfortable wearing shoes!” His daughter Patti Davis condemned the remarks in a newspaper article. “There is no defence, no rationalisation, no suitable explanation for what my father said,” she wrote.

Saudi Arabia has finally allowed women to travel abroad without approval from a male “guardian”

The landmark reform erodes the longstanding guardianship system that renders adult women as legal minors and allows their “guardians” — husband, father and other male relatives — to exercise arbitrary authority over them. The decision, following years of campaigning by activists, comes after high-profile attempts by women to escape their guardians despite a string of reforms including a historic decree last year that overturned the world’s only ban on female motorists. “A passport will be granted to any Saudi national who submits an application,” said a government ruling published in the official gazette Umm al-Qura.

Trump issued an executive order late Thursday that imposes another round of sanctions against Moscow, which has denied wrongdoing in the spy case. They spent weeks in critical condition but recovered.

Manchester United has reached an agreement to sign England’s Harry Maguire from Leicester for £80 million

He will become United’s third summer signing following Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James, who arrived from Crystal Palace and Swansea respectively.

Maguire made 69 Premier League appearances for Leicester after joining from Hull City in 2017. The deal means Maguire becomes the world’s most expensive defender, eclipsing the £75m Liverpool paid Southampton for Virgil van Dijk in January 2018.

Former world number one Naomi Osaka says she “hasn’t had fun playing tennis” since winning the Australian Open

Osaka, 21, beat Czech Petra Kvitova in a thrilling final in January to seal back-to-back Grand Slams, topping the world rankings. But she has been hampered by injuries and struggled with poor form since. “The last few months have been really rough for me tennis-wise,” Osaka wrote on Instagram. “Thankfully I am surrounded by people I love and who love me back. “Whenever things go wrong I blame myself 100%. I have a tendency to shut down because I don’t want to burden anyone with my thoughts or problems, but they taught me to trust them and not take everything on by myself.

Apple and Google will temporarily stop their employees from listening to voice recordings captured by smart speakers and virtual assistants

It follows a Guardian report that third-party contractors used by Apple had heard people having sex and discussing private medical information. Siri and other services can activate in error after wrongly picking up sounds they mishear as their “wake” words. Apple said the move would affect users worldwide. Technology companies use staff to “grade” voice recordings to improve their virtual assistants’ accuracy rates in handling requests – and take steps to anonymise the source. Google, for example, distorts the recording before it is listened to in order to disguise the user’s voice. However, many members of the public were unaware of the practice until the Bloomberg news agency reported the fact earlier this year. “We are committed to delivering a great Siri experience while protecting user privacy,” Apple said in a statement.

Facebook has banned accounts it says are linked to the Saudi authorities in an effort to spread propaganda through fake accounts

It says the operation mainly targeted the Middle East and North Africa, and most of the content was in Arabic. More than 350 accounts and pages have been removed. It is rare for the social media giant to publicly link such activities to a government. Saudi Arabia has so far made no public comments on the issue. In a statement, Facebook said it acted this week to tackle “co-ordinated inauthentic behaviour” on its platform and on Instagram, which the company owns.

The Google Play store may have over 200 harmful apps that were reportedly downloaded 32 million times

According to Lukas Stefanko, a researcher at CSIRO’s Data61, around 205 “harmful” apps available for download on Google play store have been identified. Apparently, the figure doesn’t surprise you but you would be alarmed when you realize that those apps were downloaded for a whopping 32 million times last month alone. The bulk of the suspicious software – 188 to be exact – contained hidden ads, accounting for 19.2 million installs. The rest of the offenders fell under the categories of subscription scam, ad fraud, stalkerware, fake apps, fake antivirus tools, adware droppers, and software with built-in backdoors, according to statistical data compiled by ESET malware researcher Lukas Stefanko with the help of other developers.

“Friends” star David Schwimmer has claimed police in the UK were “a little disappointed” that he wasn’t the viral booze thief

They were a little disappointed that they had ruled me out as a suspect; it wasn’t me. They said something kind of cheeky and I thought ‘Good on them for having a sense of humor.”
