Global Customs officials in Germany caught four tonnes of cocaine, worth around $ 1 billion, in the country’s largest ever drug bust The drugs were being transported from Montevideo, Uruguay, to Antwerp, Belgium, when they were intercepted by authorities during a routine check two weeks ago. The shipment, listed as soya beans, was hidden in over 200 black sports bags inside a shipping container. The drugs have since been destroyed under strict security, officials said. “Assuming that this likely high-purity cocaine can be cut to triple the amount for street sale, the 4.5 tonnes has a street value of approximately €1 billion”, the Hamburg Customs agency said in a statement. It added that the Hamburg prosecutor’s office were now investigating the intended destination of the container. Reagan – a supporter of Taiwan – called the president the next day, telling him: “To see those… monkeys from those African countries – damn them, they’re still uncomfortable wearing shoes!” His daughter Patti Davis condemned the remarks in a newspaper article. “There is no defence, no rationalisation, no suitable explanation for what my father said,” she wrote. Saudi Arabia has finally allowed women to travel abroad without approval from a male “guardian” The landmark reform erodes the longstanding guardianship system that renders adult women as legal minors and allows their “guardians” — husband, father and other male relatives — to exercise arbitrary authority over them. The decision, following years of campaigning by activists, comes after high-profile attempts by women to escape their guardians despite a string of reforms including a historic decree last year that overturned the world’s only ban on female motorists. “A passport will be granted to any Saudi national who submits an application,” said a government ruling published in the official gazette Umm al-Qura. Technology Apple and Google will temporarily stop their employees from listening to voice recordings captured by smart speakers and virtual assistants It follows a Guardian report that third-party contractors used by Apple had heard people having sex and discussing private medical information. Siri and other services can activate in error after wrongly picking up sounds they mishear as their “wake” words. Apple said the move would affect users worldwide. Technology companies use staff to “grade” voice recordings to improve their virtual assistants’ accuracy rates in handling requests – and take steps to anonymise the source. Google, for example, distorts the recording before it is listened to in order to disguise the user’s voice. However, many members of the public were unaware of the practice until the Bloomberg news agency reported the fact earlier this year. “We are committed to delivering a great Siri experience while protecting user privacy,” Apple said in a statement. The bulk of the suspicious software – 188 to be exact – contained hidden ads, accounting for 19.2 million installs. The rest of the offenders fell under the categories of subscription scam, ad fraud, stalkerware, fake apps, fake antivirus tools, adware droppers, and software with built-in backdoors, according to statistical data compiled by ESET malware researcher Lukas Stefanko with the help of other developers.
