What happened: On May 18, police detained the cleric who performed Dua Zehra’s nikkah, the 14-year-old girl who went missing from Karachi in April but subsequently claimed she had walked away from home to marry Zaheer Ahmed, aged 21. Details: According to the police, cleric Qari Hafiz Ghulam Mustafa performed a “fake nikkah” for the youngster and her husband because it is unlawful in Sindh to marry off minors under the age of 18. In the meantime, the age limit for marriage in Punjab is 16 years. Asad Gokal says further proceedings will take place in Karachi, “Orders issued to transfer the case to Sindh High Court & trajectory of case to be shifted towards kidnapping & abduction.
