Declawed lion rescued from Cambodian home after TikTok video of the animal went viral

What Happened: Authorities raided a house in a district of Phnom Penh in Cambodia to salvage an 18-month-old lion that had been defanged, declawed and illegally kept as a pet.

Details: It was reported that the animal was tracked down after videos of it went viral on TikTok. The officers found the male lion padding sedately with a collar around its neck on Sunday. One blew a tranquillizer dart into its side before the team moved in and carried the slumped 70 kg (154 lbs) animal into a metal crate. The Wildlife Alliance NGO assisted the raid in a joint operation led by the Forestry Administration, with the Deputy Prosecutor of the Phnom Penh Municipal Court, the police and the military police. “It was rare species that was smuggled from abroad,” Neth Pheaktra, the Environment Ministry spokesperson stated. “According to the law, people don’t have the right to raise wildlife at home, especially rare species,” he added. The lion was transferred to Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre in the outskirts of the capital, officials said.

The perpetual abuse of wildlife animal is also pretty common in Pakistan. Elites tend to keep animals from peacocks to exotic birds to signify wealth and status. In March, a Pakistani couple used a ‘Sedated Lion Cub’ as prop for wedding which sparked a tremendous deal of outrage. In May, Syed Imdad Hussain Shah, a resident of Lahore, was arrested for keeping an African Lion as pet after he shared photos and videos of himself and his friends with the animal on social media accounts.
