Dear HEC, prioritize education and let minorities celebrate their culture

Why did HEC decide to impose a ban on Holi celebrations in universities? Although, the government rejected the proposal but why was it even proposed? Didn’t they think for a second, about how would the minorities feel? It raised concerns about religious tolerance and cultural diversity in the country. Enough with the differences, we’re all Pakistanis! While it is important to respect the Islamic values and traditions that form a significant part of Pakistan’s identity, it is equally crucial to recognize and embrace the religious practices and festivals of minority communities, such as Hindus. Holi is a vibrant and joyful festival celebrated by Hindus worldwide to signify the arrival of spring and the victory of good over evil. It serves as a cultural and social event that brings people together, fostering a sense of unity and inclusivity. By participating in Holi celebrations, Hindu students in universities have an opportunity to express their religious and cultural identity and strengthen bonds with their peers. Banning the celebration of Holi based on the argument that it affects the country’s “image” is a questionable premise. Who are we even trying to impress? People are already leaving Pakistan, do they want all the minorities to leave? Shouldn’t Hindus have the freedom to celebrate their culture with their friends? Does HEC feel threatened that it will be a bad impression on the “Muslim” students? I don’t think so. We’re all grown-ups and we know what is right and wrong. Furthermore, HEC’s concerns about the “erosion of Islamic values” due to Holi celebrations need to be examined critically. Islam itself promotes principles of compassion, understanding, and respect for other faiths. It’s quite funny how HEC is not ready to improve the education system of Pakistan but Holi ho ya na ho, iski bari tension hai. There are other important things going on in Pakistan too, how about we focus on that? Rather than suppressing cultural expression, efforts should be made to promote interfaith dialogue, understanding, and mutual respect among all students.
