Terrorism list by Intelligence Bureau impacts lawmakers
Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on Friday met the director general of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), the law minister along with several members of parliament allegedly investigated by the Intelligence Bureau (IB) for links to terror outfits, sources said. The list that impacted lawmakers was sent to IB by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s office and the IB was not responsible for it, DG IB Aftab Sultan stated. The list could create issues for the lawmakers as opponents can form cases against the former under Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution. The Trump administration, reitierating a claim made by India has informed Congress that it too believes the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) passes through Pakistan’s northern areas, which India claims is part of the disputed Jammu and Kashmir territory. The new US position on CPEC will further strain already tense relations between the US and Pakistan, which also opposed the greater role Washington has assigned to India in Afghanistan in a strategy President Trump announced on Aug 21.
Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy’s ‘A Girl In The River’ wins Best Documentary at Emmys
Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s documentary A Girl in the River won the Best Documentary award at the 38th Emmy Awards. Chinoy previously won an Oscar for Best Documentary Short Subject in 2012 for Saving Face and in 2016 for A Girl in the River. She also won an Emmy for her documentary Children of Taliban and two for for Saving Face .
Pakistan concerned over new US Strategy about India’s role in Afghanistan: Khawaja Asif
Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif issued a statement on being “genuinely concerned” about India’s role in the latest United States (US) policy in Afghanistan especially since Pak-US bilateral relationship is having a tough time adjusting to Washington’s South Asia Strategy. Asif also remarked that he hopes to see US media playing a positive role in “reflect[ing] Pakistan’s changing realities in its reporting”.
Ahsan Iqbal condemns ‘Jihad Fatwas’ on social media by religious leaders
Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal asked the religious leaders and clerics during the National Assembly session to condemn”the fatwas for jihad” posted by people on social media. Iqbal also asked social media users to refrain from targeting the former prime ministers and members of the cabinet by declaring them non-Muslims. “Only the state can declare jihad; no group of people has the right to declare jihad against another group,” remarked Iqbal.
Sarah Waqar, Safa Iftikhar to represent Pakistan at the Telenor Youth Forum in Oslo
Pakistani women- Sara Iftikhar and Sara Waqar– have been selected out of 5,300 applicants from Pakistan to attend the Telenor Youth Forum, a year-long programme which kicks off in Oslo this December during the Nobel Peace Prize events. Telenor Youth Forum is a global platform for future leaders to impact the global and national society in a positive way through dialogue and digital technology. The girls will be working alongside 22 young individuals from around the globe on ideas that contribute to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
Cotton production rises to 50 percent
Cotton production has had a growth of over 50 percent, according to a report issued by the Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA). The report stated that more than 3.99m bales reached ginneries against 2.64m bales last year. Both Sindh and Punjab posted high growth in cotton production this year, but the fear of a pest attack still hovers over. 21,000 Bohras from across the globe observed Ashra in Karachi
More than 21,000 members of the Bohra community from across the globe, including almost 12,000 Indians, participated in their annual congression in Karachi after 2 decades, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) statement issued on Friday. A number of Indian citizens who crossed Wagah border to attend the congression expressed their acknowledgment for the peaceful environment and hospitality extended to them during the stay, states the Pakistan Army’s media cell.
