Court sets age limit for marriages and declares under 18 marriage as an ‘illegal contract’

What happened: On March 1, the Islamabad High Court gave a verdict about the wedding age and noted that any marriage under the age of 18 is an illegal contract. Justice Babar Sattar headed the IHC bench, which issued a detailed verdict regarding underage marriage and clarified that children under the age of 18 can not get married. Details: ARY News quoted the development as,  “Even if a child has become a witness to a marriage ceremony, then his witness will be declared null and void.”  At the same time, the IHC remarked that the age of puberty is biologically 18 and before the age of 18, individuals are not legal.  Previously: In 2019, the Pakistani Senate passed an amendment that noted that the marriage under-18 could lead to a fine of 200,000 rupees and imprisonment.
