What Happened: On Monday, a special court for gender-based violence sentenced Samson Masih to collective imprisonment of 22 years based on charges of kidnapping and rape of a 25-year old woman in Lahore.
Background: Last year, the Factory Area police registered an FIR against the suspect, Samson Masih, and put him on trial. The prosecution supported their case against Masih using 10 witnesses. According to them, the convict abducted the victim which she was taking the garbage outside her house. The victim was taken to an unknown location where Samson Masih sexually abused her and kept her hostage for a month. The police traced his location with the help of his cell phone, rescued the victim and arrested Samson. They then build a case against him and produced him before the court.
The verdict: Presiding Judge Jamshed Mubarak announced a guilty verdict, handing down a 22-year sentence which was a culmination of a 15-year sentence for rape and a 7-year sentence for kidnapping. The sentence is to be run concurrently. Additionally, the court also imposed a Rs 300,000 fine on the convict along with a Rs 200,000 compensation fee that had to be paid to the victim.
