Coronavirus cases spiking in Sindh’s jails

What happened : As the number of covid-19 cases increase drastically across the country, with the positivity ratio being the highest in Sindh, the number of active coronavirus cases in Sindh’s prisons has risen from 31 to 112 in a span of 10 days. The new round of Covid-19 screening among inmates was initiated on the directives of Sindh Prisons IG Qazi Nazeer Ahmed. Despite proper implementation of standard operating procedures (SOPs) to control the spread of the virus, several more positive cases were detected across the provincial jails. Given this recent surge in cases, it was decided that family visits of the inmates were to be restricted to once every ten days. There are over 18,000 prisoners in Sindh’s 22 jails, which have a total capacity of 13,000 prisoners. Given the second wave of the virus nationwide, it was inevitable that the virus would rear its head again in Sindh’s ever-crowded jails. According to reports, Karachi’s Malir district jail is the most affected by this second wave, having a record 70 new covid patients.
