Christian-Only Condition for Sanitation Jobs Has Been Removed By The Pakistan Army

An advertisement by the Pakistan Army offered sanitation jobs for Christians only, and received a lot of criticism on social media for being discriminatory. It has now been removed The ad stated that the job position of sanitation workers in the army’s Mujahid Force could only be filled by Christians.

Other job vacancies: drivers, sepoys, tradesmen etc were also included in the ad, but they did not have similar religious specifications. Why was it only the sanitation worker job that was allotted to people of Christian faith? Salman Sufi, activist and former DG of the Punjab Chief Minister’s Strategic Reform Unit, also addressed this issue:

“We are grateful that this clerical error was addressed as usually Christians are [stereotyped] as sanitary workers so it is considered a norm and we wanted that changed”

Several other activists took to social media to express their displeasure:

Pakistani actress and host, Nadia Jamil, also voiced her opinions on this matter.

This was also in violation of article 27 of the constitution of Pakistan which clearly states: “No citizen otherwise qualified for appointment in the service of Pakistan shall be discriminated against in respect of any such appointment on the ground only of race, religion, caste, sex, residence or place of birth”.

Sadly, this is not the first time such an incident has taken place in Pakistan

In 2017, an ad for sweepers in an Urdu newspaper also specified that they only wanted minorities (Hindus, Christians, Shias) to apply. The same thing happened in January ; KPK district hospitals wanted Christian-only sweepers. Nadia Jamil was right, This Is Disgusting.
