In the spirit of Easter Sunday, Rio decided to pay homage to doctors and medical professionals working on the front lines against the coronavirus.

The Christ the Redeemer statue overlooking all of Rio was lit up to look like a doctor in a coat and stethoscope yesterday night. Flags of countries most affected by the virus were projected onto the statue along with multiple images of doctors and nurses in scrubs working in hospitals.

Happy Easter from Rio

A mass was also conducted by Rio’s archbishop Dom Orani Tempesta at the base of the statue during the heart-warming production. Messages of gratitude were plastered onto the statue in many different languages. Besides this tribute, instructions to “stay at home” were also featured in the performance of lights.

This is not the first time that the statue has been lit up in response to Covid-19. Previously, flags of countries that were worst hit by the virus were featured onto the statue as Rio’s own gesture of solidarity.
