Choice of faith and job; Over 100 Sikh guards lost jobs in Toronto due to the no-beard policy

What happened:  Nearly a hundred Sikhs working as security guards in Toronto lost their jobs and were demoted due to a mask-wearing policy under COVID-19-related restrictions. TRT World quotes,  “The restrictions made the Sikh workers choose between their faith and jobs.”  Details:  It is pertinent to mention that Sikhism requires the followers never to trim their hair which subsequently makes them keep long beards. At the same time, in Toronto, strict implementation of COVID-19 SOPs was witnessed with the guards deployed at shelters and other places wearing an N95 protective face mask, which should be fitted.  More:  However, the move by the Toronto government irked major backlash, and Pierre Poilievre tweeted,  “This is ridiculous. A beard does not prevent someone from safely doing a job as a security guard. Anyone who lost their job (including Sikh security guards) should be reinstated & compensated for lost pay.”
