Students have been protesting in all major cities of India, including Delhi against the new citizenship bill which excludes individuals belonging to the Islamic faith from seeking asylum in India.
The bill is being hailed as ‘anti-Muslim’ because it will provide Indian citizenship to refugees from the surrounding three countries on one condition-that they aren’t muslim.
The Indian police used force and brutality to shut down a peaceful protest held by the students of Muslim Jamia Millia Islamia University in Delhi. The police broke into the university, fired rubber bullets, threw tear gas and beat up demonstrators with batons.
Bollywood has always been quick to raise its voice and pick sides, and such is the case regarding the protests, many have condemned the brutality, but the majority remains silent.
In a country like India, where Bollywood actors are hailed and revered as superstars, their silence on an issue like this speaks volumes.
Many Bollywood celebrities have spoken out against the citizenship bill and the use of violence against students including Parineeti Chopra, Farhan Akhtar, Priyanka Chopra, Sidhart Malhotra and more.
But one of the many voices from Bollywood which is missing is that of Ranveer Singh.
Ranveer Singh is hailed as an icon for young India, making his silence on the matter unfortunate. Known for being loud, original and going against the grain, his fans on the other side of the border hoped the young actor would raise his voice for the young students, but no such statement has come forward. No posts regarding the citizenship act, the student protests or Delhi police’s brutality can be seen on his Twitter, Facebook or Instagram profiles.
While Ranveer Singh is silent on the matter, he has pledged to support India’s Smile Foundation, especially to support the cause of education for underprivileged children.
