What you need to know: With hundreds of online pages selling clothes from Shein in Pakistan, the fast fashion brand produces at least 10,000 clothes every day. It has been targeted with severe allegations, which are too shocking to go unnoticed. What happened: Recently, a popular TikTok exposed alarming writing on Shein garment tags. The words “Help Me,” “need your help,” and “I’m in dental pain” reflect the urgency of help needed by the employees who are restlessly working for Shein to make a living. Shein has been unresponsive to cater the allegations and only remarked that the alleged labels were only poorly translated phrases. Why it matters: This was just the start of the havoc; Channel 4, a leading media organization, went undercover to Shein factories and found many issues of workers’ rights and unsettling information regarding the business’s operations. Turns out that the workers are highly underpaid with only 4,000-5,000 yuan a month. The strict regulations enforced by the company are inhumane, with 18 working hours per day, cutting off salaries over minor mistakes simply exploiting the employees. Details: The terrible environment is just one of the many reasons why Shein has faced extreme backlash. The massive amount of clothes produced every day encourage “wear and throw away” culture and is excessively harmful to the environment. The items that don’t sell are not recycled; instead dumped in landfills, and they’re back on to produce more. With every passing day, the increase in the amount of clothes raise concerns over carbon footprint and consequently, environmental catastrophe. As a responsible customer, by making more purchases from Shein, we are just encouraging its unethical practices. Shein, with its unprofessional work ethic, and torturous environment is making it almost impossible for the workers to continue working. It is high time that these famous and high selling brands stand accountable for their unprofessional behavior. We urge customers to be more vigilant and stop buying from such brands, who apparently bring you clothes in affordable prices, but the dark side of them stand of much more significance.
