Balochistan continues to call out Sindh for ‘stealing its water’

What happened: Baloch legislators accused Sindh of stealing the province’s water share on June 10, blaming the Indus River System Authority (Irsa) for failing to ensure a fair allocation of water among the federating units. Details: Former senior provincial minister Mir Zahoor Buledi, speaking on a point of order at a provincial assembly session, claimed that Sindh was plundering Balochistan’s water despite repeated objections. Balochistan’s Minister of Communications and Works , Sardar Abdul Rehman Khetran, agreed with him, “Sindh and the federal government are robbing Balochistan of its water,” Khetran claimed. “This has had a significant impact on farmers and producers in the province’s green belt,” the minister continued. The ongoing theft was sharply denounced by lawmakers from both the treasury and opposition benches. The Sindh administration was unanimously advised to take note of this practice in order to address the province’s farmers’ problems. Why it matters: Balochistan has been accusing Sindh of water theft for a long time now. Farmers in the districts of Naseerabad and Jaffarabad have been criticising this practise for several years.
