Who is Aruba: Aruba is 23 years old and comes from a family of seven in Karachi. Her father and brother both work in the field of engineering, and this encouraged Aruba to get into engineering herself too. Growing up she didn’t play with dolls but with tools and electronic devices. She loved working with and fixing machines. Aruba was especially interested in airplanes and is now the youngest female aerospace engineer in Pakistan. Her journey: Aruba comes from a humble household with limited financial resources. To follow her dreams of becoming a certified aeroplane engineer, she had to give around 17 expensive exams. With her father’s encouragement to keep striving despite all odds, she decided to work after her Intermediate to be able to afford the exams herself. She joined Hawks International in 2014 and worked for them till 2019 to be able to pay for her certification exams. The journey that took her over 5 years to complete would have taken just 1.5 years if she had the finances. She now workd on small aircrafts to keep them fit to fly. The inspection and the maintenance of the aircrafts is highly sensitive as any error could lead to loss of lives. Aruba aims to work with a Pakistani airline as a an aerospace engineer and wishes to prove that there us nothing Pakistani women can’t do. Social disease: She considers the barriers that exist for women progressing in our society as a “disease” which should be eliminated. Despite being discouraged by people, Aruba found many supporting her dreams too. Seniors at her company who were initially wary of her because of her gender came to respect her when they acknowledged her work and determination.
