The investigative report: A new report published on Thursday by Amnesty has labeled the draconian measures taken by the Chinese government against Uyghurs, Kazakhs, and other Muslim minorities in the Xinjiang region as ‘crimes against humanity.’ Their website presents the evidence gathered by Amnesty’s investigation. The report includes detailed information about 60 cases of missing and detained people. In addition, former detainees explain how the government aims to forcefully assimilate them into the larger more homogenous Chinese community. This data is available for download in several languages. There is also a petition available to sign urging President Xi to release all people arbitrarily detained in Xinjiang.
The effect: “The Chinese authorities have created a dystopian hellscape on a staggering scale in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region,” said Agnès Callamard, Amnesty International’s secretary-general and a former UN investigator on human rights. Therefore, Amnesty is calling for all camps in the province to close and for the United Nations to investigate these claims and punish those suspected of breaking international law. Regardless of this, China has continued to deny the accusation running false campaigns to discredit the claims of systematic cleansing. However, this report can potentially add more pressure on Chinese authorities as other countries such as Britain have started to recognise the atrocities committed by the Chinese government against the Uyghur people as genocide.
