What happened: A British business, Currys PC World (@currys) set a Guinness World Record by building 1,496 recycled washing machines into a 44-foot pyramid. The aim behind this was to raise awareness about technology recycling.
The pyramid: The store manager Darren Kenworthy pitched this idea to his bosses and convinced them to hold back some washing machines, which were on their way to be recycled. The pyramid emphasised on the company’s ‘New Life Not Landfill’ pledge. It involves recycling outdated technological items. The pyramid had a square base made of 256 washing machines, with 31 feet 7.5 inches on each side. There were no supporting structures to keep the pyramid in place. All the washing machines used in the installation will be recycled. Currys received help and crane safety procedures from Ainscough Training Services for the effort.
Why it matters : Despite local councils and stores offering free pickup and drop-off services, the company recently performed a poll that indicated that 68 percent of British individuals are unsure of where and how to dispose of their electronic waste. During National Recycling Week in September 2021, Currys PC World chose to set the first record for the largest washing machine pyramid.
