70-90% of Pakistani women are subjected to domestic violence: JPMA

What happened: On March 13, Express Tribune reported that nearly 70 to 90 per cent of the women in Pakistan are subjected to domestic violence, both physical and mental abuse. Tribune quoted the estimate included in the Journal of Pakistan Medical Association, revealing,  “Most cases the perpetrator of violence is the husband.”  Details: At the same time, the report highlighted that the women in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are most affected by the violence as the province has the most number of Khula petitions. Express Tribune also quoted accounts of different women of Pakistan as Lubna Bibi is quoted by the publication,  “It is particularly difficult for me because my in-laws are hunting me down, because they think my divorce would bring dishonour to their name.”  More:   On the other hand, a report of district Judiciary Khyber Pakhtunkhwa showed that during 2021 more than 15,000 Khula petitions were filed in the courts. Whereas, Assistant Complaint Officer at the Human Rights Commission Peshawar, Asma Bibi, is quoted by Express Tribune,  “In most of these cases, the complainant women reported domestic violence, forced marriage, drug usage or extra-marital affairs.”  Subsequently, a social worker and Human Rights advocate, Qamar Naseem, is quoted by the publication,  “Domestic violence was seen to surge during the Covid-19 pandemic. As a result, the number of divorce cases also grew, not only in KP but also in the rest of the country.”
