According to an Indian news source, most Hindu temples were encroached by Muslims after the Partition and turned into madrassas or restaurants, toy stores, etc. However, now the Pakistani government will be restoring and reclaiming the temples to the Hindu community.
The process is set to begin with two historic shrines in Peshawar, with the Gorakhnath Temple, and in Sialkot, with the 1000 year old Shivalaya Teja Singh. The Shivalaya shrine has been vacant since 1992 when a mob attacked during the Babri mosque demolition; however, that may change soon.
According to a recent government estimate, 11 temples in Sindh, 4 in Punjab, 3 in Balochistan and 2 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were operational in 2019.
