262% surge in the prices of life saving drugs challenged in Lahore High Court

Advocate Nadeem Sarwar filed a petition in the Lahore High Court against the increase in 94 medicines. The Federal Government has allowed pharmaceutical companies to increase the prices of life-saving drugs.  The petitioner said, “the people are already worried about inflation and unemployment.” He further implored the court to declare an increase in prices of medicines null and void. Further adding that the government has allowed the price increase of medicines by 262 percent which is illegal. Special Assistant to Prime Minister on National Health Services Dr. Sultan explained the decision was taken to end the shortage of drugs from the local market. This will ensure the drugs are available locally instead of being sold through unregulated channels. He further added that the decision was made on the Drug Pricing Committee’s recommendation under the Drugs Pricing Policy of 2018.
