What happened: At a South African conservancy, a toddler died after being trampled by a giraffe, leaving her mother in critical condition at the hospital. Details: Police Lieutenant Nqobile Madlala told the BBC that “the infant was carried to the nearest doctor’s room where she died.” The location of the event on Wednesday in the sizable game park, which has 14 lodges, is still unknown. A management at one of the luxury hotels hesitated to talk, claiming that the subject was “delicate.” The park: The park is located in KwaZulu-Natal, a region that attracts both local and foreign tourists, 16 kilometres (10 miles) outside of Hluhluwe. Visitors to the farm can “enjoy close interactions with animals while strolling or riding the different pathways,” according to the park’s website. What you need to know: Giraffes are the tallest mammal in the world, and are typically nonaggressive. However, the females can become aggressive while defending their calf. A similar incident took place, back in 2018 at the Blyde Wildlife Estate, South Africa where a female giraffe trampled the wife and son of British biologist Sam William. However, the duo was treated, and eventually survived.
