Transpersons will now be given official jobs as the Local Government and Community Development (LG&CD) department has decided to fix their two percent employment quota in several vacant posts in the local governments, councils such as Metropolitan / Municipal Corporations, Union Councils, etc, the Walled City of Lahore Authority, and the Local Government Board.
What Happened: The policy decision to allocate a two percent quota in all vacant posts for transpersons penniless at intersections, streets, and markets due to poverty and lack of formal employment was taken in compliance with the Constitution of Pakistan which guarantees equal rights to transperson under the Transgender Rights Act 2018. Transpersons constitute 321,744 people in Pakistan’s population. Presently, the WCLA, Local Governments, Local Councils and Directorate General of Local Government has 3,912,836, 70,000 and 1,718 approved sanctioned posts. And approximately 70 percent are lying vacant, therefore, 1500 of these posts will be allotted to transpersons in the near future. The Response: This new measure taken to empower transpersons in Pakistan has been welcomed and appreciated.
