13,000 Pakistanis volunteer for Covid-19 vaccine trials
Health officials have stated that, to date, 13,000 people have volunteered for Covid-19 vaccine trials in Pakistan.
Trials of a chinese vaccine made by CanSino Biologics started on the 22nd of September, and since then the vaccine has been given to 13,000 Pakistanis. Dr Ejaz Khan, chairman of infection control at Shifa Hospital in Islamabad, who is overlooking the trials confirmed this information to media outlets.
The vaccine trials are being conducted at five centres in Pakistan — two in Karachi, two in Lahore and one in Islamabad.
The previous trial target was administering the vaccine to 10, 000 people, but Dr, Khan has stated that the target has been revised to 18, 000 now.
Currently, five coronavirus vaccines are in the final stages of development, in China.
China plans to vaccinate 50 million people before the start of Lunar New Year in February, according to news agency Reuters, for which it has granted emergency-use status to two candidate vaccines from Sinopharm and one from Sinovac Biotech.
The fourth candidate, which is the vaccine being developed by CanSino Biologics Inc, has been approved for military use.
