The death toll of people killed in the Lyari building collapse on Tuesday has reached up to 19 people, with many more injured. Rescue workers have pulled 13 more bodies from the rubble, and state that there might still be more people trapped under the rubble, and are continuing their operation in full force.
“Total 19 bodies have been recovered and all of them were moved to the Civil Hospital Karachi where their families have identified them,” said Mr. Sharjeel Khan, DIG-South.
People in the area, as well as opposition parties in Sindh, claim that there were around 27 people in the building at the time of the incidence. The building’s collapse has tarnished the local government’s image, and highlighted their inability to tackle with the issue of illegally constructed structures.
So far, there has been no word from the government regarding when the rubble of the collapse will be removed. The Minister of Information for Sindh has formed a special inquiry regarding the identification and demolition of illegal structures such as the building that collapsed in all districts of Karachi.
